Carpet cleaning and stain removal tips to get your carpets clean and fresh!
The following carpet cleaning tips will help you to extend the life of your carpet and reduce wear and tear:
- Do not rub or scrub - carpets should be dabbed in a gentle manner to pick up spills or clean spots. Be patient. Dab.
- Ice it away - gooey stains like candle wax and chewing gum can often be removed without much effort with the use of ice. Apply, let it solidify and then gently remove.
- Oil based stains generally react well to the use of a mild degreaser like dishwashing liquid. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of a liquid dishwashing detergent per one 1 cup of lukewarm water. NEVER use a stronger concentration.
- Before DIY carpet cleaning or stain removal, you should test the spot remover to make certain it does not discolor your carpet. Test in a not easily seen area like under the stairs to see if your carpet is colorfast.
- Vacuum your home often, twice a week if possible. Not only does it eliminate dirt and pollen but it helps keep carpet fibers well groomed.
- Clean spills, urine pet stains, vomit, milk, wine and all other mess as soon as they happen.
- Reduce wear and tear on high traffic areas with floor and door mats. Teach kids to wipe their feet and friends might want to leave their muddy shoes outside.
- If your carpet is wet from cleaning do not walk on it, until dry, to avoid resoiling. Wetness can cause varnish, paint and lacquer transfer from wooden furniture and metal legs can rust and discolor the carpet.
- Eliminate harsh chemicals, detergents and other popular household cleaners on your carpet that will damage them in the end.
- When the spill is completely removed, rinse the area with cold water; blot with a dry cloth until all moisture is removed.
